Question: How successful is biodentine in vital asymptomatic primary molars with deep caries?

Apologies for this question as I work in a very backward location. How successful is biodentine in vital asymptomatic primary molars with deep caries?

Salvatore Sauro: have a look at this article: Clinical and radiographic assessment of the efficacy of calcium silicate indirect pulp capping: a randomized controlled clinical trial.Hashem D, Mannocci F, Patel S, Manoharan A, Brown JE, Watson TF, Banerjee A.J Dent Res. 2015 Apr;94(4):562-8. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25710953

Scott Aaron: This abstract doesn’t say if it is primary or secondary teeth. It talks of teeth with reversible pulpitis having an indirect pulp cap but having apical periodontitis. I’m a little confused.

Salvatore Sauro: It is in permanent teeth. However, our ongoing study is giving very good results with primary teeth affected by deep caries lesions.

Pato Ramirez: Salvatore Sauro hi! Greetings from Mexico, do you Know where i can find those studies?

Pato Ramirez: Thanks! Anything on primary teeths?

Salvatore Sauro: Pato Ramirez I have unpublished data and it works quite well with sandwich technique

Pato Ramirez: Inbox 😬

Liviu Steier: One summarize…it is not as straight forward as presented in those papers!

Scott Aaron: What’s your material of choice in such a situation ?

Liviu Steier: It is not only about materials I am afraid…there is a concept!

Pato Ramirez: Currently working on RCT benefits of direct pulp capping in primary theeths over pulpotomy… any information you may have?

Liviu Steier: Pato Ramirez please contact me via pm. [email protected]

Maria Henry: Following

John Comisi: Josette Camilleri Barbara has done a lot of work with this material as well.

John Comisi: Downside. It can take between 7-45 minutes to fully set.

Gregori Kurtzman: Works well and as John Comisi says has a very long set time. You can place then cover with a layer of dual cure resin like Panavia or G-Cem LinkAce light cure that and then fill the rest of the cavity and you dont have to wait it can set under the resin

Liviu Steier: An approach I share!

Liviu Steier: Scott have send several papers via pm.

Ken Serota: Biodentine: There are porosity and interfacial adherence issues depending on wet or dry environments. As a retrograde material in a fluid environment porosity decreases and adaptation increases – in pulp capping or pulpotomy it’s the reverse – calcium silicates will inevitably be the sealer displacing AH PLUS – perhaps – AH PLUS sets rapidly – value? Bioceramic sealers about 4 hours I think – albeit Ca(OH)2 is released – not to conflate 2 issues – why are all post core buildups not done with rubber dam placement? Let the games begin!!
